Porto de Galinhas (Port of Chickens Beach) is in our selection the second best beach in Brazil. This spectacular beach changed from a fisherman village to a very popular destination for domestic travelers, that are hypnotized by its beauty and happy about the medium level of infrastructure that the beach has developed.

The history of the beach name is very interesting. In the 19th century, Brazilian government prohibited the slave commerce, which was very common in Recife until then. So, pirates had to create a solution to continue bringing slaves to Brazil avoiding the law, and then they started delivering slaves to other beaches more deserted, like for example Suape and Ipojuca. When the "black ships" (named that was given to the ships that commerce slaves) arrives to the port, to avoid suspicious the code message was "there are new chickens in the beach", where chickens were obviously the slaves; hence, the beach get the name of Port of Chickens Beach.

WHERE TO STAY AND HOW TO GO - HOTELS AND FLIGHTS

In Porto de Galinhas, there are not major hotel chains. The concept of big hotel is not adequate for this type of beach, so you will not find here the big hotels that are normally across Brazil.

The interest thing about Porto de Galinha beach is that there are a lot of villages in the downtown, but you have to consider that in the nearby at night there are a lot of parties and bands playing in the streets. Those villages are cheap and if you want to be in the middle of the party that is a good option, but if you are looking for peace and tranquility, you should go to the villages far from downtown.

The villages have a great level of comfort, and most of them are decorated in a very tropical way, taking advantage of the environment and normally very near the beach. Normally you could find a room with a panoramic view to the sea for a very reasonable price.

The easiest way to arrive to Porto de Gallinhas beach is to flight to the Recife International Airport. If you are coming from Europe you have flights from Lisboa and from Paris coming to Recife. In Lisboa you can check Air Portugal that has daily flights and in Paris you have TAM airlines. And if you are coming from the United States there are weekly flights from Miami in TAM airlines.

After you arrive in Recife you can rent a car and drive to Porto de Galinhas Beach. It will take you about an hour and a half (70 Kms). but the trip is very nice because you will be passing trough sugar fields and small towns before arriving to Porto Galinhas Beach.

ACTIVITIES

A great attraction of the Porto Galinas Beach is the tide pools. The trip from the beach to the pools is very short and enjoyable and when the tide goes out, the pits trap water and beautiful fishes, and up to 20 swimmers can be accommodate in the pool. You can also feed the fishes who are very friendly and looks familiarized with tourists.

One of the most famous pools is the "Map of Brazil", which has the shape very similar to Brazil's map.A very strange attraction of this beach is the presence of singers who play guitar melodies and improvise the lyrics, sometimes relating the song to somebody of the audience, to couples or simply to the beauty of the ocean. Sometimes you could find two of them, and they make a king of duel answering while singing and challenging each other to know who the best beach singer is.

There are many nightclubs in Porto de Galinhas to offer to the tourist a good entertainment at night. On weekend the clubs can be a little bit overcrowded but is still possible to get a table and have fun.

Also there is a good level of handicrafts in this beach, and you can find nice products in the different beach-type stores.
